Susan Wadsworth Fall with Swooping Red Shape (2021)
Pastel, pencil and ink on Arches paper 19 1/2” x 26”

Susan Wadsworth:
My art is usually inspired by place: by the landscape of New England and the dozens of places I have visited.  Much of the work on exhibit at the DubHub will be related to the Viking cruises we have taken since retirement.  There are sunsets, views from the stern, as well as images of Hawaii and French Polynesia.  Other works are inspired by New England, Lake Temagami in Ontario, and Japan.  I am inspired by the simplicity of Japanese art as well as the abstractions of the Early American Modernists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove and Milton Avery.

I create my images using a dozen or more layers of pastel, often in conjunction with pencil or ink.  If you look carefully, you may find some Japanese calligraphy (or kanji) in some of the works.  The use of free gestures and texture, along with the simple shapes and lines defining energy, contour, and texture are the basic elements of my work.

Bio:
Susan M. Wadsworth grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and now lives in Rindge, NH.  She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Colby College in Maine, earned a Master of Fine Arts in painting at Cranbrook Academy of Art and a master’s in art history from Tufts University.  She taught for 27 years in the Humanities Department of Fitchburg State University in MA, concentrating on the development of modern art, the history of architecture, and interdisciplinary courses with music, philosophy, and art. She has presented many lectures at conferences with subjects as diverse as synagogue architecture to the modernist works of Kandinsky and Hans Hofmann.  She enjoys having the audience begin to look at buildings and artworks in new ways, understanding the relationship between form and content.

As an artist, she creates abstract landscapes inspired by New England and the many places she has visited around the world, including sunsets executed on numerous cruises.  Her pastel and ink works have been shown throughout the northeastern United States.   She writes for Art New England and for many years has been chair of the Fall Foliage Art Studio Tour (FFAST) in the Monadnock region.

She has traveled to 48 U.S. states as well as Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Spain, France, Italy, England, Scotland, Wales, Austria, China, and Japan.

Her work is represented by Gallery Sitka

Lauron Lewis Last Call

Lauron Lewis:
I am very grateful to the DubHub for showing my watercolors. The pieces selected for the show represent a very accurate representation of the styles and themes I have pursued over the past seven years. All are landscapes - many have surreal elements and may share a common theme. Most have ties to our region and contain recognizable features. There are several, however, that are complete setting fabrications, more like fantasy renderings. Some, such as the surfing trilogy, may also seem mildly humorous or whimsical as I like to keep my work lighthearted and fun to look at. I am fascinated with the concept of depth in art so several of the pieces showcase that as well. Over recent years I have also created a number of cards that are representative of the region. A good sample of my cards are also displayed.

Bio:
I like to think of myself as a soldier of the arts, or perhaps more appropriately as an unpaid volunteer. I have marched down many paths of creative pursuit - novelist, screenwriter, librettist, and singer-songwriter. My many written works are under my name in Kindle (Lauron Lewis). My music work is under the pseudonym of Lex Ventura and is widely available on Soundcloud, Beatport and other platforms.

I began dabbling in watercolor soon after my retirement from a long career in corporate communications. My wife Laurie and I moved to New Hampshire in 2017. I used to joke with my kids when they were little not to overplay the role of gift giving related to Christmas as it was very unlikely that any specific gift would change a life.

Well, wouldn't you know that the gift Laurie gave me our first Christmas here changed mine. It was a fabulous watercolor set. I was completely surprised but very delighted. Early in our marriage I had tried my hand at illustrating a children's book that I wrote, but hadn't drawn anything in more than 25 years. Our house has a nice studio in the basement where I started working on scenes and cards for Christmas, After a while I decided to go bigger with some poster size efforts. I am self taught but draw inspiration from many artists working in various mediums.

I like to combine actual landscapes with surreal elements. I am fascinated by perspectives of depth and enjoy working on scenes with water. Occasionally I will introduce whimsical or humorous elements to evoke a sense of fun. I strive to make my work pleasing to the eye and will experiment with various styles depending on the piece. I like working with watercolor because it offers so many nuances and can be a fast-paced medium, even though it is often unforgiving when mistakes are made.
