For those musicians looking to enhance and expand your jazz techniques, this workshop may be just what the jazz doctor ordered. Instructors include Austin based saxophonist Paul Klemperer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Fox who teaches at Berklee School of Music in Boston, and is the founder of Morningside Music Studio in Arlington, MA, a vibrant, community focused music school. Mornings will include ensemble sessions with an emphasis on improvisation and expanding repertoire Jazz Improvisation: Breaking out of routines to find your voice. Evenings will include jam sessions, including at the Saturday Coffee House & Open Mic held at the DubHub, at which the jazz workshop instructors and participants will perform.
In this workshop, Paul Klemperer provides practical approaches to combining technique, theory and stagecraft to help your music tell a story and connect with the audience. This includes: 1) Phrasing and Song Structure; 2) Dynamics, Tone, and Articulation; 3) Developing Unified Awareness (Your Show). Use What You Know, Work Your Show. Musical performance is a mixture of technique and theory, but it is also a “show,” a story you present to an audience.
Dan Fox shows how to integrate your playing technique with your musical ear, trust your instincts and play collaboratively with other musicians. He will also focus on Expanding Repertoire: Playing In Different Styles.
